Bishops Castle denied entry to Montgomeryshire League

Shropshire based side Bishops Castle have been denied a return to the Montgomeryshire League after leaving the Merican League this summer, with both a panel of FA and FAW members agreeing Bishops Castle should play in the English pyramid system.

The decision was made by the club to leave the Merican League as travel to games became costly and as they felt the league wasn’t up to standard. With inclusions of teams from as far as Wolverhampton, many teams felt that they were to be better off playing in the Welsh pyramid system.

The club have lost players as the appeal goes on but have agreed to commit to the club once the club finds out what league it is in.

Lee Davies, former Newtown and Welshpool midfielder said

“The support we’ve received from the local football community in England and Wales has been amazing”

Davies also gave thanks to MAFL chairman Terry Foulkes and secretary Bernie Jones, who are willing to let the club start their campaign providing they are allowed in.

A return to England will not be on the cards as the Merican league has already started and the club have said they will stand by that decision.

Shropshire FA are keen supporters of the move and are persuading the FA to give special dispensation to play in Wales.

“At the end of the day we just wish for eleven lads to play in the MAFL, that is our local league.”
