Carmarthen Town 4 – 2 Goytre

Nathaniel MG Cup 2nd Round

Carmarthen Town 4 – 2 Goytre

Carmarthen Town qualified for the quarter final of the Nathaniel MG Cup with a convincing win against Gwent side Goytre FC. On the back of three consecutive league defeats the Old Gold, fielding a strong team, started on the front foot moving the ball well through midfield but with Goytre defending well clear cut chances were at a premium. However in the 19th minute the deadlock was broken. A good move in midfield found Kieran Lewis on the left side of the box, after jinking inside he unleashed a curling right foot shot that was saved by Goytre keeper Nick Thomas only for the ball to rebound off the retreating Aaron Garrett and the ball rolled over the line. With the away team now starting to push players forward ex- Carmarthen Town strikers Luke Prosser and Dan MacDonald were beginning to see more of the ball in the final third however Carmarthen capitalised on the extra space and another sweeping move through midfield found Kieran Lewis who released Matthew Thomas on goal and he calmly slotted past Nick Thomas to make it 2-0 on 29 minutes.

Despite Carmarthen’s dominance Goytre pulled a goal back on 36 minutes. A floated free kick from the half way line found Sam O’ Sullivan 12 yards out, the Carmarthen defence looking for an offside flag but O’Sullivan didn’t wait to see a flag, controlled well and volleyed the ball into the far corner of the net.

With the second half barely 2 minutes old Carmarthen regained their 2 goal advantage. Kieran Lewis curled in a free kick from the right hand side and Dave Vincent rose highest to head past Thomas to make it 3-1. The game quickly became end to end and Goytre sent on their giant striker Lewis Sommers to try to get them back into the game. However it was Carmarthen who again capitalised on the gaps in midfield and another flowing move Kieran Lewis was again on hand to cross into the box and Mark Jones volleyed home on 73 minutes to make it 4-1. With the game seemingly won, manager Mark Aizlewood brought on youngster Rhodri Cole, Danny Thomas quickly found him in space in the box but a last gasp block prevented the teenager from making it 5. One last attack from Goytre in injury time was finished off well by Josh Brown.
